Our Neural Origins

At Driftwood Consultants LLC, our work is grounded in the belief that how we communicate—verbally, in writing, and through presence—shapes how we lead.
Founder Robertson S. Erskine, Ed.D. began exploring this truth long before launching Driftwood. His doctoral research at the University of San Francisco“The Sound of Ink: A Bakhtinian Analysis of Expressive Intonation in Written Feedback,” examined how people “hear” tone in written communication—and how their prior experiences with a person influence what that tone means to them.

How research led to Neuroscience

That early work explored how relationships and context color meaning.
Today, neuroscience helps us understand why: the brain is a prediction engine.
Every message we read or hear is filtered through neural “priors”—patterns built from our past experiences and emotional associations. These predictions shape not only how we interpret tone, but also how we regulate emotion, connect with others, and make decisions under stress.

This bridge between language and neuroscience became the foundation for my current practice: helping leaders and organizations become aware of the invisible predictions that shape culture, communication, and trust.

From Insight to Practice

In leadership development, these insights are not abstract—they’re practical.

At Driftwood Consultants, we teach leaders to:

  • Recognize how their intent may differ from what others perceive.

  • Communicate with clarity and empathy, grounded in awareness of how the brain interprets tone and threat.

  • Build feedback cultures that turn misunderstanding into dialogue.

  • Apply reflective practice and neuroscience to strengthen relationships, performance, and resilience.

Your message doesn’t live in isolation; it lives in the listener’s mind.
When leaders understand how perception works, they can communicate with authenticity and precision—creating cultures where trust replaces assumption and learning becomes continuous.
This is the essence of Driftwood’s approach: translating insight into practice, and theory into transformation.
